Interview with Peter Treseder, Diploma of Fundraising Management graduate

What is your position and the name of your organisation?

I'm the Executive Director of The Millennium Foundation Ltd, which is the fundraising arm of Westmead Hospital and Westmead Millennium Institute (WMI). Westmead Hospital is the largest teaching hospital in the Southern Hemisphere and WMI is one of Australia's premier medical research institutes. My major responsibilities entail leading the Foundation and providing clear strategic direction for all functions and activities.

Why did you choose to study the Diploma of Fundraising Management?

I spent 22 years in commercial/retail banking with a focus on credit quality, complex corporate restructions and corporate affairs before deciding to make a career change. I chose the Diploma of Fundraising Management because I view this qualification as the key educational benchmark for the fundraising industry in Australia. As soon as I was appointed Executive Director, I wanted to find out if we were operating correctly and to benchmark the organisation against best practice.

What did you find valuable in the course?

I found that the course reinforced my view that the Foundation was operating correctly and my eyes were opened to best practice around the world. The selection of readings that I have now accumulated must rank among the best available in Australia. Also, I had the support of a very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and helpful tutor who was always available to provide guidance as required.

What were the positives and challenges of distance education?

The positives of distance education are that it is flexible and you can complete the readings and assignments at times to suit yourself and not have to drag yourself to lectures which could be inconvenient because of time and location of classes. The challenge is to remain focused and not to let your enthusiasm lapse as a result of this ‘freedom’. I found that I needed to be focused, efficient and disciplined. I achieved this by setting aside one or two hours each morning after training and before work (most mornings I started studying at about 6 am), and up to ten hours on a weekend. By following this timetable, I completed the Diploma in less than six months.

What are the most important things you have gained from the course?

I take away a sense of accomplishment and feel empowered because I know that I am educated about the latest theories and developments in the field of fundraising management.

This course has also provided me with the understanding that the Foundation is operating in an environment of international best practice. As well, it provides me with a sound basis on which to continue to build our worth to the people we serve.
